Building materials should, wherever possible have the lowest embodied CO2 emissions and therefore minimise the environmental impact of the build.
In the selection of components such as insulation and windows / doors, environmentally responsible choices are widely available. Where possible building products which have been certified as responsibly produced should be used, where this is not possible then locally produced materials should be used as an alternative. This provides the benefit of supporting the local community and limiting the CO2 emissions produced in the transport of materials. With regard to the choice of insulation materials, we recommend avoidance of any material with a high global warming potential, this is applicable for roof, wall, floor and pipe insulation.
